Discussions about theories of translation are too often concerned with distinctions between literary and nonliterary texts, between prose and poetry, or between technical articles on physics and run-of-the-mill commercial correspondence. But in order to understand the nature of translation, the focus should not be on different types of discourse but on the processes and procedures involved in any and all kinds of interlingual communication (Bell, 1987).  The wide range of theories and the great diversity of problems in translation have been treated by a number of persons interested in translation theory and practice, e.g. Güttinger (1963), Vazquez Ayora (1977), and Wilss (1988).

Translation theory: object and objectives. Translation is a means of interlingual and intercultural communication. The translator makes possible an exchange of information between the users of different languages by producing in the target language (TL or the translating language) a text which has an identical communicative value with the source (or original) text (ST). As any observable phenomenon, translation can be the object of scientific study aimed at understanding its nature, its components and their interaction. Introduced by Robert Lado (1915-1995). • Contrastive linguistics, which investigates correlations between functional elements of SL and TL, creates foundation for the theory of translation, but cannot be identified with it.

Bible translating, the focus of this work, offers a unique subject for such a study, as it has an exceptionally long history, involves more than 2,000 languages, a vast range of cultures and a broader range of literary structures than any other type of translating. Not only of interest to Biblical scholars, therefore, this work explores issues of textual meanings and the procedures for communicating these meanings into other languages and cultures.

As a practicing translator and a PhD candidate (Translation and Terminology), I am finding reading this book quite pleasant and challenging. The author's purpose is to lay the groundwork for a translation theory that is based on evidence, on objective or observable aspects and not on “individual anecdotism” as he puts it. So, the book's organization and the arguments presented veer the reader towards that goal. Bell also pushes against the normative approach of translation teaching (and translation theories).
